Brief Biography of Bishop Wayne N. Miller

The Rev. Wayne N. Miller, bishop, was the Senior Pastor of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Aurora, Illinois, from 1994 until his election as bishop of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod, ELCA, in June of 2007. Since 1994, St. Mark’s has grown from a baptized membership of 1100 with 250 adults at worship, to a baptized membership of 1800 with 530 at worship and 250 children and youth at the church school. The congregation is moderately traditional in worship style, and has an active social outreach ministry

Bishop Miller was born in Chicago in 1950, and has lived most of his life in the Chicagoland area. He holds an undergraduate degree in music, and for a time was a professional member of the Chicago Symphony Chorus. Prior to seminary, he worked in the business community as a purchasing agent and as a project engineer. He has been married to Pamela Miller since 1980, and has two grown sons.

In addition to his previous parish duties, Miller was a member of the Metropolitan Chicago Synod Council. He has been an adjunct instructor of Christian Thought at Aurora University, a founding board member of Suicide Prevention Services of the Fox Valley, and a member and presenter for a special judicial commission on Domestic Violence in the Faith Community. He was installed as bishop on September 9, 2007.
