The Synod Council (at its December 10, 2005, meeting) voted to recommend the Synod Deacon Program to the 2006 Assembly for adoption as a continuing resolution of the synod.
The purpose of the Synod Deacon Program is for the certification and support of those engaged in service as deacons in congregational ministry:
v
By providing
basic and uniform standards for preparation, education, and accountability;
v
By offering
opportunities for continuing education, collegiality and support;
v
By
encouraging excellence in ministry; and,
v
By being a
forum for mutual concerns and needs.
The Synod Deacon Program encourages pastors and congregations to enrich the ministry of lay members within their faith community through faith formation, education, and service in the Church and community.
The
Synod Deacon Program is created in accordance with ELCA Guidelines Related to
Synodically Authorized or Licensed Ministries and the Constitutions, Bylaws, and
Continuing Resolutions of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America 7.61.02.
