The mission of our synod is: In Jesus' Name • Proclaim the Gospel • Make Disciples • Do Justice. The Justice Team was formed in 2000 to help fulfill the justice part of Christ's Gospel. The team consists of one elected member from each conference. The Rev. Cynthia Hileman is the synod liaison, and the Rev. Dan Schwick is the liaison for Lutheran Advocacy Network. The main thrust of the Justice Team is to minister to the "least of these" as commanded by our Lord, by engaging in service type ministries, and by being advocates for just social public policies. To effectively carry out our mission, we have organized Action Groups to deal with specific phases of the ministry, and the Justice Team acts as an umbrella organization for all the Action Groups and provides funding for the work of the groups. Currently, there are three
Action Groups dealing with Hunger, Housing and
Homelessness, and Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered
issues. The third group Environmental Concerns, has received a grant from the Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation. The Action Groups are comprised of volunteers from all eight
conferences, and can address issues by drafting resolutions, starting
letter-writing campaigns, informing congregations of advocacy issues, or by use
of any other appropriate methods. |
