Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), the women's organization of the church, opened registration Sept. 4 for its Seventh Triennial Gathering.  The gathering will be July 10-13, 2008, at the Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City.  The featured speaker, Sister Joan Chittister, co-chairs the Global Peace Initiative of Women, a partner organization of the United Nations.  The Rev. Karen Bockelman will present the Bible study, and the Rev. Elizabeth Eaton, the Rev. Heidi Neumark and the Rev. Marysol Diaz will explore various dimensions of the gathering's "Come to the Waters" theme.

The 16-page registration booklet was mailed to Women of the ELCA congregations and is online.  It includes details about the "Evening with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir," worship and "Inspirational Sessions," workshops, optional excursions, housing and more.  Online registration is open at http://www.womenoftheELCA.org/tg08/registration.html on Women of the ELCA's Web site.  The booklet includes registration and housing forms that can be submitted by mail or by fax through June 15, 2008.  Registration will be available on site, too.

The gathering follows immediately after Women of the ELCA's Seventh Triennial Convention, July 8-10, 2008.  The convention is the organization's highest legislative authority.  Voting members will vote on proposed constitutional changes, Women of the ELCA ministry directions for 2008-2011 and the organization's 2009 budget.  The convention will elect Women of the ELCA officers and executive board.  There is no fee for visitors to attend the convention.

Women of the ELCA Purpose Statement

As a community of women created in the image of God called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, We commit ourselves to grow in faith, affirm our gifts, support one another in our callings, engage in ministry and action, and promote healing and wholeness in the church, the society, and the world.

Our Foundation - Grasped in Grace

"For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to the riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengthened in your inner being with power through his Spirit, and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted and grounded in love. I pray that you may have the power to comprehend, with all the saints, what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen" (Ephesians 3:14-21, NRSV).
