Compensation

The Metropolitan Chicago Synod is grateful for those who fill our pulpits in times of transition and pastoral absence. Congregations compensate those providing pulpit supply directly.

For an appropriate honorarium, we suggest the following minimums:

• $200 for one service
• $75 for each additional Sunday morning service
• $100 for an additional service that is on Saturday or on Sunday evening
• Travel reimbursement (IRS mileage rate for 2026) – 72.5¢ per mile.

In compliance with federal law, and subject to legal penalties, individuals must have proper authorization to perform any employment in the United States. This applies to both employees and independent contractors. Students may wish to consult with their school as to their eligibility. The Metropolitan Chicago Synod urges congregations to collect a completed and signed Form W-9 from any individual being paid for services provided to the congregation.
